Environmental Services Division

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors has identified natural resources stewardship as a long-term strategic goal for the County with the direction to, “Thoughtfully protect and manage Albemarle County’s ecosystems and natural resources in both the rural and development areas to safeguard the quality of life of current and future generations.”

The Environmental Services Division (ESD) broadly serves to address this goal. The primary responsibilities of the division are:

  • 1) implementing programs – both mandated and voluntary – to protect water resources and other natural resources
  • 2) managing our operations to ensure environmental compliance, promote pollution prevention, and minimize waste
  • 3) promoting sustainability through climate action planning, solid waste reduction, and energy use reduction.

Our functions include public education and involvement, enforcement of the Water Protection Ordinance, maintaining County assets (stormwater facilities and dams), managing the environmental aspects of County operations, making it easier for citizens and businesses to be environmentally responsible, and overseeing the planning, design, and construction of capital projects.

We support innovative initiatives to protect natural resources and are committed to being a leader in environmental stewardship.
