Albemarle County Department of Finance offers several ways to make personal property and real estate tax payments:

24/7 AUTOMATED TAX PAYMENT KIOSK

County McIntire Road building only. Must have tax bill or account number. No adjustments or change provided. Any overpayments are credited towards future installments.


DROP BOX

The following drop box locations are available for your convenience.  Please do not use cash when remitting payment at the drop box locations.     

County Office Building, 401 McIntire Road

  • Parking lot adjacent to the Visitor’s Entrance 
  • Two drop boxes located on the right side of the hallway on the first floor( under the bookcases)

      County Office Building – 5th Street, 1600 5th Street  
             (Only open 30 days prior to 1st half and 2nd half tax due dates)

IN-PERSON

Our office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., (except holidays).  Payment can be made by cash, check, money order, and debit/credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, or Discover).  Please note that a convenience fee applies when using debit or credit cards.

Our office is located on the 1st floor of the Albemarle County Office Building, 401 McIntire Road, Charlottesville.

IMPORTANT ELECTRONIC PAYMENT INFORMATION
Albemarle County accepts electronic payments for personal property and real estate taxes.  Payments can be made by electronic funds transfer from a checking account or by VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, or Discover credit cards.

Credit card company by-laws require the Department of Finance to use a third party to process credit card payments for VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, and Discover. Albemarle County uses a third-party processor named PayPal to process credit card payments for property taxes. To use the online service, PayPal will charge you a convenience fee of .30 cents + 2.5% transaction fee if paid by credit card or PayPal or $1.50 if paid by E-Check. A PayPal account is NOT necessary to pay your bill(s) online.  Albemarle County does NOT receive any of these fees.

Partial payments will be accepted; however, please be aware that payments will be applied to oldest balances first and partial payments will not constitute waiver of any penalties or interest on unpaid portions.

Please allow 2 business days for your payment to reach our office or 3 business days to remove a Vehicle Registration Hold (DMV Stop).
