Project Management Office  |  FAQs

What is project management?
Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, and best practices along with the individual strengths of project managers to develop critical milestones, manage cross departmental collaboration, and deliver defined project outcomes.

What is a project?
A project is a temporary endeavor with a defined start and finish undertaken to create a unique product or service.

What is a Project Management Office?
A Project Management Office, frequently referred to by the acronym PMO, is an organizational structure that standardizes project-related governance processes and facilitates sharing of resources, methodologies, tools, and techniques. The Mission and Goals link provides more information on Albemarle County's PMO.

How is the PMO different from the Project Management Division?
The Project Management Division is an entity within the Facilities and Environmental Services Department which works to plan and manage exclusively capital projects. On the other hand, the Project Management Office handles a range of planning and development projects outside the scope of the PMD.

What kind of projects does the PMO handle?
The Project Management Office handles strategic plan projects, operational projects, technological projects, and business process improvements. This includes both internal and external projects: anything from new software used by the county to the planning of a new county park.

What is the difference between a project manager and project owner?
The project owner is a key stakeholder, who is responsible for representing the government function and supporting current and future customer service needs. The project manager is the person tasked with guiding the project through its full lifecycle of initiation, planning, implementation, training, and support.

Where can I learn more about project management?
The Common Terminology link includes more information about frequently used project management terms. Local government employees should refer to Resources for Government Employees for project management materials.
