Livestock Survey and Roundtable Summary Now Available
From late 2012 through early 2014 County staff and regional agriculture industry partners held four roundtable meetings with stakeholders to discuss issues affecting livestock operations. The industry discussions centered on livestock processing needs and existing local market conditions. Sue Ellen Johnson (then PEC’s Director of Agriculture) shared the latest research on the scale and economics of a local processing facility, and what would be needed to achieve sustainable operations without ongoing subsidy.
With the goal of clarifying the issues affecting the scale and profitablity of livestock operations in our region, the Albemarle County Economic Development staff, the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Virginia Cooperative Extension created a survey to gather input from area livestock producers. Starr Hill Brewery Wins a Gold Medal at the 2014 World Beer Cup
Starr Hill Brewery, one of the most award-winning craft breweries on the East Coast, won a gold award in the 2014 World Beer Cup®, a global beer competition that evaluates beers from around the world and recognizes the most outstanding brewers and their beers.
Gold, silver and bronze awards in the competition’s 94 beer style categories were presented April 11, 2014, during the World Beer Cup® award ceremony in Denver, Colorado. Starr Hill’s Whiter Shade of Pale Ale beat out 55 other entries from all over the world to claim the gold medal in the American-Belgo Style Ale category. Whiter Shade of Pale marries two bold beer styles: the Belgian Wit and the India Pale Ale. The fruity and spicy esters derive from the Belgian yeast strain, while massive quantities of hops added during the dry hop give the beer significant complexity and an aroma of citrus and pine. A clean base beer of Pilsner and wheat give this beer a refreshing flavor, perfect for enjoying in warm and cold weather alike.
