Albemarle Local Government Named Exemplary Environmental Enterprise

11/5/2009

Albemarle County was accepted as an Exemplary Environmental Enterprise (E3) into the Department of Environmental Quality’s Virginia Environmental Excellence Program on Wednesday, November 4, at the Board of Supervisors meeting in Lane Auditorium.  The acceptance was conferred by Larry Simmons, who is the Deputy Director of DEQ’s Valley Regional Office.

The Virginia Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP) encourages superior performance through environmental management systems and pollution prevention.  VEEP drives environmental excellence by encouraging facilities within the Commonwealth that have strong environmental records to go above and beyond their legal requirements. VEEP members earn recognition and are potentially eligible to utilize specific regulatory and administrative flexibilities.

Albemarle was accepted into the program following a rigorous application process that evaluated the County on a variety of criteria including pollution prevention activities, training, emergency response procedures, environmental legal requirements and environmental impacts.

In accepting Albemarle into the program, DEQ officials commented specifically on the county’s pollution prevention efforts, noting “ very impressive initiatives including energy reductions, a large green roof, Climate Protection Program, and several green procurement and contracting policies – safer chemical policy, a green fleet policy, green renovation policy and an environmental agreement for contractors.  The County’s green map is an activity that other localities might want to duplicate.”

“We are very pleased to be accepted into the DEQ’s Virginia Environmental Excellence Program and look forward to the benefits, including permit fee discounts, of participating in this prestigious program,” said Environmental Compliance Manager Sarah Temple.
