What is a Community Meeting?
A Community Meeting is required for all Zoning Map Amendment (ZMA, also known as a rezoning), Special Use Permits (SP), and Compliance with the Comprehensive Plan (CCP) applications.
A Community Meeting is an in-person opportunity for:
- the applicant to provide information and answer questions about a proposed project,
- Albemarle County staff to provide an overview of relevant procedures and policies and,
- community members to ask questions of and provide feedback on a proposed project.
A Community Meeting is not:
- a public hearing
- a decision point in the development process
What Happens After a Community Meeting?
Staff coordinates with partner agencies to receive their comments on the proposal and also incorporates what is said at the Community Meeting into their comments, then sends comments to the applicant. The applicant can proceed to the Planning Commission or request a deferral to work on revisions.
Once the applicant decides to proceed, a public hearing is held before the Planning Commission, where the public can voice their opinions to the Commission. The Commissioners then provide a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors.
Ultimately, the Board of Supervisors holds a public hearing, where the public can voice their opinions to the Board. The Board makes the final decision on the proposed project. If the proposed project receives an affirmative vote, it then moves to requirements that are reviewed by County staff and other partner agencies until it is built and operational.
How Can I Follow a Development Proposal?
The County Planner reviewing the proposal will share their email address at the end of their presentation. Agendas for the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors are available on the County website and on the County calendar at: albemarle.org/calendar.
