Albemarle County, VA
Home MenuSchool Zone Speed Cameras
In a major initiative to enhance the safety of children in our community, Albemarle County launched school zone speed enforcement cameras on September 3, 2024, on Hydraulic Road.
These cameras will be operational and issue citations to drivers who exceed 10 mph over the posted speed limit in designated school zones on Hydraulic Road northbound and southbound adjacent to the Lambs Lane campus (which includes Albemarle High School, Journey Middle School, Greer Elementary School).
To ensure a smooth transition, there was a 45-day warning period during which violators received warnings instead of citations. This period, beginning on Tuesday, September 3, and ending Friday, October 18, aimed to educate drivers and encourage compliance before enforcement began on Monday, October 21.
This initiative aligns with Virginia's legal framework for the use of photo speed monitoring devices in school crossing zones, ensuring compliance and safety across the board. The County has partnered with U.S.-based public safety technology company Altumint to implement the school zone speed camera program. In similar programs across Virginia, Altumint has observed a 55% decrease in speed violations within the first three months.
