Focus on Climate Action

Global climate change presents one of the biggest challenges of the century to our world. It affects people, places, and wildlife. It amplifies other challenges in society, like economic inequality, chronic health risks, natural disasters, and loss of biodiversity. Climate change will impact everyone on Earth.

Climate change also presents a unique opportunity: By calling on our community to go beyond “business as usual,” we can find innovative ways to promote good jobs, clean air, and clean water for the health and prosperity of all residents of Albemarle County.

Albemarle County has committed to being a leader in spearheading local action to address climate change. To limit the worst effects of climate change, in 2019 the Board of Supervisors committed to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2008 levels by 2030 and to achieve zero net emissions by 2050.

What We Do

Local governments play a crucial role in addressing climate change: Our knowledge is more rooted in the locale, and we will be the first to respond to community needs in the face of a changing climate.

In line with the County’s overall vision, our climate protection program seeks to achieve these targets in ways that: benefit the health of all residents; protect the local natural environment; support a thriving local economy; promote education on climate action; and contribute to a more equitable community.
