Albemarle County, VA
Home MenuCivil Division
Civil cases are disputes between individuals, entities or groups (companies and organizations). The difference between civil cases and criminal cases are that civil cases typically involve matters of monetary damages arising from a civil wrong (such as a tort or breach of contract). Civil cases also include divorces, name changes, and adoptions, just to name a few of the common matters that appear before the Circuit Court.
The Albemarle Circuit Court Clerk’s Office requires the filing of a cover page with any action (other than applying for an assumed or fictitious name, requesting to perform a one-time marriage ceremony, and making application for a concealed weapons permit) filed with the office.

* The Albemarle Circuit Court cannot provide legal advice with regard to any matter, particularly divorce, and we advise anyone getting a divorce to hire an attorney. However, the Fairfax County Clerk’s Office provides the above link as a resource for those pursuing a divorce pro se, and we are willing to make that available to the public as well.
