Report a Problem or Concern

Water is our most precious resource. If you have a concern about the following, please reach out:

Responsibility for Maintaining a Stormwater Facility

Your facilities remove pollutants from stormwater runoff and reduce downstream flow rates. You are required by law to minimize your facility’s negative impact downstream and the County can help you do that. We periodically inspect facilities and convey any maintenance or repairs needs to you, the owner. For additional information about maintaining stormwater facilities, visit the Rivanna Stormwater Education Partnership and click on BMP Maintenance.

Do you have a question about a particular facility? Use the Albemarle County GIS Web to determine where facilities are and basic information about that facility.

Experiencing Drainage Issues on Your Property

Most localized issues are the responsibility of the property owner. We can help you find out if the County has the legal ability to address the issues and, if so, help you find a solution. If the County has no ability to fix the problem, then we can often assist the property owner in resolving the issue.

Responsibility for Maintaining Local Dams

Larger dams are regulated by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Regulation. The County does not regulate dams, except during construction of the dam (see the Virginia Stormwater Management Program below). However, the County does operate six State-regulated dams – mostly located at County parks. Find out more about dam safety.
