Signs are everywhere but what if you need just one more? Or one is damaged? Missing in action?
There are several different organizations that are responsible for the installation and maintenance of street signs in and around Albemarle County.
Public streets are those maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as a part of the primary and secondary system of highways.
Private streets are those that are approved as ‘private streets’ or ‘private roads’ under Albemarle County ordinance. However, they are not designed or constructed to VDOT standards and are not maintained by VDOT. Generally, signs on private streets are the responsibility of the property owner or Homeowner’s Association.

Non-Street Name Traffic Signs
On public roads, VDOT is responsible for the maintenance of traffic control signs such as, but not limited to, stop signs, speed limit signs, and caution signs. To contact VDOT about a lost or damaged traffic sign at the VDOT website.
For signs on private roads or within a subdivision, the property owner or the Homeowner’s Association is responsible for repairs and replacement.
Watch for Children Signs
Prior to 2012, VDOT installed and maintained Watch for Children signs. Changes to Virginia code transferred responsibility to individual Counties.
We run a program through which County residents may request the installation of a “Watch for Children” sign. The requestor is responsible for a non-refundable application fee and the cost for fabricating and installing the sign. Once approved by VDOT and installed, the County will be responsible for the sign’s continued maintenance.
For more information or to request a Watch for Children sign, please contact us at FESinquiry@albemarle.org or 434-296-5816.
