What to Know

Interacting with "Sweeping Beauty," Albemarle's street sweeper

  • Give it space: When encountering the street sweeper on the road, move over if you can to give it space to sweep.
  • Drive Cautiously: The street sweeper operates at roughly 12 miles per hour. Drive at a reasonable speed when passing.

Operating Times and Locations

  • On weekdays, the street sweeper will operate on high-traffic volume roads prior to the morning rush hour to lessen the impact on traffic. Other roads will be swept throughout the rest of the morning.
  • The street sweeper will prioritize primary roads and entrance corridors based on need and traffic volumes. It will primarily operate within the urban ring, targeting 65 miles of primary roads and 87 miles of secondary roads, such as Rio Road, Avon Street Extended, and Richmond Road. Several roads in Crozet will also be part of the street sweeper's cleaning route.
  • Primary roads will be cleaned twice a month to maintain a high level of cleanliness and aesthetic appeal.

The Virginia Department of Transportation remains responsible for road maintenance in Albemarle County. Members of the community should report road concerns and traffic hazards to https://my.vdot.virginia.gov/#2.
