Among the most important efforts to address digital equity in our community is the Albemarle County Public Schools device policy. Students receive grade appropriate devices at no cost, with access to the software they will need for the classes they are enrolled in. This was of vital importance during the peak of the pandemic.

During public engagement, it became clear that residents device needs vary. Some residents would like a laptop, valuing the power and portability. Some residents would prefer expanded device access in public settings. Some residents value the smaller form factor of a tablet.

Working with community partners, device programs will focus on creating a local ecosystem for device refurbishment and distribution. This model creates entry-level technology jobs, reduces e-waste, and ensures that devices donated locally provide a benefit locally.

Program development continues and will be delineated at the appropriate time.
