An Auxiliary Grant (AG) is an income supplement for individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and certain other aged, blind, or disabled individuals who reside in a licensed Assisted Living Facility (ALF), an approved adult foster care home, or an approved supportive housing setting. Not all ALFs accept AG payments.

An AG payment is issued to an individual monthly, to be used with a designated amount of their monthly income to pay the maximum monthly AG rate. This rate is determined by the Virginia General Assembly and is adjusted periodically. The AG Program is 80 percent state funded and 20 percent locally funded.

For more information about financial eligibility and locating an assisted living facility that accepts auxiliary grants, please refer to Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services.

Eligibility

A person must meet both the functional and income requirements to be eligible for assisted living with an AG. The Local Department of Social Services (LDSS) is required to screen individuals seeking admission to an assisted living facility with an auxiliary grant. The only exception applies to individuals receiving case management services from a community services board.

The LDSS will need consent from the individual needing to be screened or consent from a legally authorized representative. The Intake Worker will ask questions about your ability to manage activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, mobility, etc. using the Uniform Assessment Instrument (PDF).

The Intake Worker will assign the referral to an adult services worker. The assigned worker will contact the individual needing to be screened and schedule an appointment. The screening can take place in the person’s home and there is no fee for the screening.

You will be notified in writing of the results of the screening. Determination for meeting the functional criteria will be shared by the assigned worker. A determination for the AG will be mailed to you. Once both the screening and AG eligibility criteria are met, you will have thirty days to find placement.

Eligibility is determined on a yearly basis. This requires the assigned worker from the LDSS to reassess your level of care.
