Albemarle County operates a federally mandated Energy Assistance Program with heating (fuel), cooling, and crisis components for all residents with economic need.

Fuel Assistance Program

The Fuel Assistance Program helps with home heating fuel and related charges. Benefits are determined and authorizations for deliveries or services are sent to vendors in December. This program has financial and non-financial requirements.

When to Submit an Application

  • Applications are accepted from the second Tuesday in October until the second Friday in November

Cooling Assistance Program

During the summer, the Cooling Assistance Program provides for the purchase of window air conditioners and fans, or for repair of cooling equipment and/or payment for electricity for households containing a vulnerable individual who is aged, disabled, or under age 6. This program has financial and non-financial requirements.

When to Submit an Application

  • Applications are accepted from June 15th through August 15th

Crisis Assistance Program

The Crisis Assistance Program is intended to meet a household's emergency heating needs. This assistance offers heating equipment repair or purchase and/or a one-time only heat security deposit. Purchase of home heating fuel or payment of heat utility bill is available beginning January 1st. This program has financial and non-financial requirements.

When to Submit an Application

  • For equipment-related assistance or security deposit
    • Apply from November 1st through March 15th
  • For heating fuel & utility bills (primary heat expense)
    • Apply from first work-day in January through March 15th
