Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provide health coverage at no cost or low cost for eligible families in Virginia. In Virginia, CHIP is called Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS). Virginia Medicaid for kids is called FAMIS Plus.

Medicaid was created to assist people who have lower incomes, but coverage is dependent upon other criteria as well. Medicaid Expansion in Virginia also increased the income limitations for parents, so even if you weren’t eligible before January 2019, you may qualify now.
