The Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) is the agency that administers Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in Virginia.

There are several Medical Assistance Programs offered in Virginia. Each program covers different groups of people and has different eligibility criteria. When you apply for Medicaid, you are screened for all possible programs based on your age, income, and other personal data. To be eligible for a Medical Assistance Program, you must meet financial and non-financial criteria for that program.

Medicaid applications can take up to 45 days for determinations. Applications for disabled individuals who have not received a disability determination from the Social Security Administration may take longer than 45 days for determination.
