Hospital Entrance Mission statement: Is to ensure that all patients of the UVA Hospital have access to apply for Medicaid by ensuring a simplified application process with the enrollment that is timely and accurate for those who are eligible, while providing excellent customer service with compassion, integrity and inclusivity. We are dedicated to the continuous improvement in services being provided to decrease health disparities regardless of patient's ability to pay.

Vision Statement: To be the best Hospital Based Medicaid Unit in the state by providing excellent customer service to the patients and internal as well as external partners with compassion, integrity and inclusivity.

The University of Virginia (UVA) Medicaid Unit is the result of a contractual agreement between the University of Virginia Medical Center and the Albemarle County Department of Social Services, to assist both inpatients of the hospital and outpatients of UVA’s affiliated clinics, in applying for Medicaid.

The Medicaid Unit serves all residents of Virginia and is an intake processing unit only. Applications are taken at bedside for the convenience of the inpatient and/or their families, processed and then sent to the patient’s local department of social services for ongoing case maintenance.

UVA Medicaid Unit Partners

The Medicaid Unit has many partners to make the process as smooth as possible for the patients during their time of need.

Patient Financial Services (PFS) – Conducts preliminary financial screenings for patients, then sends a referral list of potentially eligible patients to the UVA Medicaid Unit so we can help them apply for Medicaid and process the application.
UVA Social Workers – Refer patients who need to be screened for Medicaid, bridge our communication between the patients and their families, assist the patients in getting the needed verifications.
Change Healthcare (CHC) – A private contracted company who are also able to apply for Social Security disability benefits for the patient and take the Medicaid application at the same time. They then bring the Medicaid applications to our unit for processing.
Local Department of Social Services – We work closely with the local agencies to ensure timely enrollments, if the UVA Medicaid unit cannot complete the enrollment in house.

Can I apply for Medicaid at the University of Virginia (UVA) Medicaid Unit?
You can apply for Medicaid at the UVA Medicaid Unit if you or a family member are admitted to the hospital and/or have appointments with any of the UVA affiliated outpatient clinics. We work closely with admissions and UVA Patient Financial Services to screen both inpatients and outpatients for potential Medicaid eligibility, then we or Change Healthcare (another agency providing services at the hospital) reaches out to the patient for further screening.
If my Mother, who lives in Greene County or another county surrounding Charlottesville, needs assistance applying for Medicaid and is an inpatient at UVA, can the UVA Medicaid Unit assist her?
The UVA Medicaid Unit can process applications for the entire state of Virginia and can enroll for 42 local departments of social services.
If I already have children on Medicaid at my local social services office, and have a baby, may I apply at the UVA Medicaid Unit to add the baby to my case?
Yes, the UVA Medicaid Unit can assist in getting the newborn added to your existing case. We will get the information about the baby, proof of birth letter, and then send it to the ongoing caseworker at the local department of social services to process the change.
Does the UVA Medicaid Unit help with Emergency Services Medicaid?
Yes, the UVA Medicaid Unit or Change Healthcare will assist in taking the Medicaid applications for those residents who are only eligible for Emergency Services.
Can the UVA Medicaid Unit process for all categories of Medicaid?
The UVA Medicaid unit can process for all categories of Medicaid to include, Aged, Blind Disabled, Families and Children, Adults 19-64, Pregnant Women, and Long Term Care.
If I have an open SNAP or TANF case at the local social service office, may I apply for Medicaid at the UVA Medicaid Unit?
You may apply at the UVA Medicaid Unit. Once the case is processed, the case is sent to the local department of social services for enrollment.
What are the benefits of applying at the UVA Medicaid Unit rather than the local department of social services office?
Applications are taken by the bedside if inpatient for the convenience of the patient and/or families, checklists for any needed verifications are given immediately rather than waiting on the mail, we work closely with the social workers, case managers, UVA Patient Financial Services (PFS), and Change Healthcare in getting the patient approved so the patient can receive the medical care needed. The unit works closely with PFS to ensure that once the patient is enrolled in Medicaid, PFS has the necessary information for billing.
