Additional Program Information

Albemarle County implements a number of programs – both mandated and voluntary – to protect local water resources and waters that are downstream including the James River and Chesapeake Bay.

Virginia Stormwater Management Program (VSMP) – On July 1, 2014, the County began administering a revised and expanded program to regulate land disturbing activities and land development.

Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) – The County administers a number of programs to minimize the amount of pollutants discharging from developed areas into State waters or through storm sewer systems. Note: The County is required by State permit to post these reports to the website.

Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) – Since 2014, the County has been required – under its MS4 permit – to contribute towards the cleanup of local streams and the Chesapeake Bay by reducing the amount of pollutants being discharged into local waters. Over time, these requirements may change based on the condition of these waters. Note: Albemarle County is required by State permit to post these reports to the website.
